Renamed the Richard Whitcomb Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021 to honor Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb, the Hall of Fame was established in 2011 to honor the athletes, teams, coaches, and supporters who went above and beyond in bringing recognition, honor, and distinction to the School through their outstanding achievements in the field of athletics.

Richard Whitcomb Athletic Hall of Fame

The Richard Whitcomb Athletic Hall of Fame speaks to the importance of competitive athletics at St. Luke’s. Our athletic history includes many national-caliber athletes and teams that won regional titles and state championships or placed in national competition. We also honor coaches and athletic supporters who helped to shape the future athletic pursuits of so many who have played on the Hilltop. But the real stories are of our scholar-athletes training, competing, and pursuing excellence in the larger context of their St. Luke’s School education—stories of accomplishment and character, of virtues such as perseverance, courage, loyalty, teamwork, and generosity. Together, these stories weave an exciting and enlightening picture of one part of history here at St. Luke’s.

His ability, and more importantly willingness, to play any position contributed to his receipt of the 1963 Football MVP Award. On the basketball court, Alan served as captain and averaged over 26 points per game as a senior. As impressive as these accomplishments are, it was on the baseball field where Alan truly shone. A pitcher and shortstop for St. Luke’s, Alan served as captain and was named MVP his senior year after batting over .600 for the season. • 2003 Girls Varsity Soccer Team

While the School became a co-educational institution in the early 1970s, it took until the year 2000 for a girls soccer program to begin. The program won 2 games in its first year, 7 in its second, and 12 in its third, for a total of 21 victories. In 2003, the team matched that total on its way to winning the FAA tournament and New England Class C tournament. Five members of the team went on to play in college upon graduating from St. Luke’s, and one member of the team still holds the record as the only 100 goal scorer in the School’s history, male or female. The record for the 2003 season was impressive, but the team was so much more than goals scored or wins attained. They were a unit, an entity unto themselves who celebrated each victory and mourned each loss together. It is only fitting that they be inducted into the St. Luke’s School Athletic of Fame in the same way…together.
